In Memoriam: Steven Houser

Steven R. Houser, age 59, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17, of an apparent heart attack after successfully bringing his semi-truck to a safe stop. He was born on May 15, 1957, as the son of Ron and MaryEllen Houser. He married Marlene Brown, his high school sweetheart on Apr. 28, 1979. Steve graduated La Follette High School in 1975 where he was a three-sport letter-winner. He went on to play football at the University of Northern Iowa. After developing his family, he carried on his love for sports by coaching wrestling and football locally. Steve was an avid sports fan and statistician.

He is survived by his wife Marlene (Brown) Houser; Children, Lucas Houser, Trevor (Erin) Houser and Dontay (Cheri) Harper; sister Terrie (Rick) Thorstad; Brother-in-Laws, Mike Matheson, Don Brown, Mark (Michelle) Brown and Mike (Anna) Brown; along with so many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Connie. Funeral Services will be held at Bristol Lutheran Church, 6835 County Hwy N, Sun Prairie, at 11 a.m., on Thursday Dec. 22.

Visitation will be held at Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Care at 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., on Wednesday Dec. 21, and also at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Memorial may be made to the Clean Lakes Alliance, 150 E. Gilman St., Suite 2600, Madison, 53703, or for local youth sports in care of Steve's Family. Online condolences may be made here.

Futsal tournament registration open

Mark your calendars for the second annual Madison College Futsal Tournament. The event is being hosted by the Madison College men's and women' soccer programs for players high school age and older. Co-ed games are scheduled from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. Men's games are scheduled from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5.

All games will be 5v5 (including goalkeeper). Co-ed games must have two female field players at all times. Each team will be guaranteed three games. Teams will play in a playoff bracket or group stage format depending on number of entries. Games will be forty minutes in length. Ten players can be on a roster. Tournament winners will receive champions' medals. 

Sign up as a team ($100) or sign up as an individual ($25) and be assigned to a team. All money raised will benefit Madison College men's and women's soccer programs.

The waiver and tournament roster are due at registration on the day of the tournament. Please arrive 20-30 minutes prior to your first game to ensure time for registration.

Register now as registration closes on Friday, Jan. 20.

WolfPack's Slaney chosen as DIII Player of the Week

It's no secret that Madison College sophomore Rachel Slaney is having a monster season, and as a result, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named her the Division III Player of the Week for November 28-December 4 (Week 5).

This is the first such honor of the season for the WolfPack and the second in Slaney's career. She received the distinction after earning player of the week for leading the WolfPack to the 2016 Region IV Tournament Championship back in February.

Player selected as Second Team All-American

The transition from basketball to soccer was a smooth one for Madison College's Toby Andrews. The first year player was named a 2016 NJCAA Second Team All-American on Monday, Nov. 28.

The announcement comes from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the NJCAA Division III Men's Soccer Committee. Andrews is the eighth men's soccer player in WolfPack history to receive All-American accolades, but is the first in seven years.

Sophomore earns First Team All-American award

Madison College sophomore Andrea Bauer needs to clear more space on the mantle after earning yet another postseason award. On Monday, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the NJCAA Division III Volleyball Committee announced Bauer as a First Team All-American, the first such honor for the decorated outside hitter.

Bauer becomes the 15th WolfPack volleyball player to earn All-American accolades, and extends a consecutive season streak with an All-American to five.

Basketball season is now in full swing. The next double header is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 30, against Bryant and Strattom College in the Redsten Gym. Click the schedule links below to view upcoming games.

Ticket prices are $4 for adults (18 and up), $2 for students (11-17) and free admission for children (ten and under) and anyone with a valid Madison College OneCard.
