Woodwork Career Alliance's Sawblade Credential adopted as recognized credential

On Wednesday, Jan. 13, the WI Department of Workforce Development (DWD) informed Cabinetmaking and Millwork Program Director Patrick Molzahn that the Woodwork Career Alliance’s Sawblade Credential was officially adopted as a recognized credential for secondary education in the state.

Molzahn writes:

“On behalf of the WCA and the high school teachers who petitioned the state to be included, a big thank you to everyone who wrote letters of support.

In 2013, Governor Walker signed ACT 59. This grant awards up to $1,000 per student to school districts for high school graduates that earn industry-recognized certifications. When the legislation was written, the Woodwork Career Alliance (WCA) credential was not included on the list of recognized credentials.

This past November, the DWD allowed credentialing organizations to petition to be included. This effort is the culmination of two years of dialogue, countless e-mails and numerous phone conversations. I was told that of the seven applications submitted, the WCA was the only credential to be accepted as part of the appeals process!

To prove this victory worthwhile, educators and industry members need to be proactive and embrace the WCA credential.

Wisconsin has one of the largest groups of WCA Accredited Evaluators and WCA EDUcation members in the country. To quote our state motto, let’s continue to move forward and set an example by embracing the WCA credential to improve our Wood Manufacturing workforce."

Recommendations:

  • Teachers: If you are not a WCA EDUcation member, join and get trained as a WCA Accredited Skill Evaluator. Visit the WCA’s website for more information.
  • Industry members: Get to know the schools and teachers who are offering this credential to their students. List the WCA credential as a preference when advertising jobs. Consider using the WCA credentialing system in house to train and provide a path for advancement.

In Memoriam: James Stickels

The college received word Monday, Jan. 4, of the passing of a long time part-time faculty in the School of Academic Advancement (SAA), James Stickels.

During my time as Dean of SAA and since, I had the pleasure of getting to know and work with Jim. I can say in all honesty that this is truly a great loss for our students and college community. Jim had been an instructor in our ABE and ESL programs over the years and was loved by his students as well as by his colleagues.

Jim in fact was scheduled to teach for us this coming term, however, it is my understanding that at the end of the fall term he received word that he had pancreatic cancer and was given the news that he only had weeks to live.

Services for Jim will be held this weekend with a visitation on Friday, Jan. 8,from 5 - 8 p.m. at Gunderson Funeral Home (5203 Monona Drive, Madison WI) as well as on Saturday, Jan. 9, from 10 - 10:45 a.m. at the Lake Edge United Church of Christ (4200 Buckeye Road, Madison, WI 53716) with a service to follow from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

I plan to attend the service on Saturday. I know many of our faculty and staff from SAA will be in attendance, as Jim was someone they loved and respected.

For more information, see his full obituary online.

Senior Vice President
