Workshop on freelancing set for Dec. 6

Becoming a Freelancer in the Gig Economy will be offered Wednesday, Dec. 6, at the Truax Campus, Health Building, Room 309.


In this first of three workshops, attendees will learn how 54 million Americans representing one third of the entire workforce are participating in the gig economy. The presenter will cover the basics of getting started including the following topics:

  • Is freelancing right for me?
  • Getting organized for independent work.
  • Most in-demand skills for freelancers.
  • Honing your products and/or services.
  • Building your portfolio and branding yourself.
  • Tools and resources for freelancers.

Presenter Matt Nelson is an entrepreneur and freelance marketing consultant based in Madison specializing in social media marketing, search engine optimization (SEO) and WordPress. Nelson is also the organizer of the local monthly Freelancers Spark meetup group at 100state, founder and director of Grow Madison, a nonprofit that taps local experts to teach hands-on technology and business building workshops. He is also co-founder and partner at Local Route Labs, an indie video game studio that produces Disc Golf Unchained, a mobile video game on Android and iOS, and co-founder of Moov which will provide a map-based platform for volunteers to find exciting opportunities with local nonprofits.
