Madison College celebrates first generation students

Waii Kukimiya is just one of many first generation students at Madison College. After surviving a difficult childhood, she found her true family in the TriO program with other students facing challenges.

Madison College is joining other colleges nationwide to celebrate first generation students with a series of events Wednesday, Nov. 8 in the Intercultural Exchange at the Truax Campus. Events begin at 10 a.m. with a faculty panel presentation.

From 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. there will be food, games, informational tables and music. At noon students can learn about the Badger Promise program at the U.W.-Madison providing financial assistance and support for qualifying students. Following that presentation, at 12:30 p.m. two people who have benefited from Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals will share their stories. Finally, at 1 p.m. a panel of Madison College alumni will speak about their success after graduation.
